Peer Feedback

I got four people to give me feedback, here is what they said: (Hover over the image, and a text box should show.)

What's bad:

What's good:

The feedback I got was very mixed. The biggest disagreements between the people giving me feedback, was whether it looked like a music magazine, and if the contents page was easy to navigate on.

What I plan to change:

Based on the feedback, I tried to change the layout on the contents page:

I am not happy with any of these, so I am still working on it.

Pre-Production Work

Initial Names

I had already decided that my magazines was going to be called ‘Wooden', before I started with the planning. This is because it fits with the music that I want to write about, and it goes well with the organic, green/ gold look that I am going for in the magazine.

I think of wood as the origin of all music, because most instruments started of being made of wood, and today, wood is the most used as a material for instruments in most genres. Most indie artists started out by playing guitar or piano, both of which are made of wood.

The word also has a classic feeling over it, from the tradition behind it (how it has always been a material in musical instruments) to how we still use it in today’s design. It is often used when designing speakers and headphones, because it has an aesthetic feeling of it that takes you right back to the beginning of music.

With the name already decided, I spent more time finding the right font, and I ended up using an already made font, re-work it, and add a wooden pattern to the letters. This worked well with the name ‘Wooden.’ I tried several different fonts, and first I decided that I wanted a bold, sans serif font, that was easy to read, and had thick enough lines to fit a pattern in-between them. I used "DaFonts.com", and tried on fonts such as ‘Monster AG’ and ‘Watchmen.’ They worked well, but most people would already associate them with something else, so I could not use them. I landed on a font called ‘Couture’.

I tried different styles-
and different thickness to the line.

DPS Interview

The DPS interview is going to be an interview with a fictional one-man-band called ‘’Ofelia's new Father.’’ I am going to answer all the questions myself, and produce the whole interview without actually interviewing anyone.

The questions are going to be:

- Tell me about your hometown
Any musicians who have influenced you? Both new and old?
- Could you name the three most influential musicians from Scandinavia?
- When did you get into music, and were your family supportive?
-The name, Ofelia's new Father, where did it come from?
- How would you describe your music? Would you categorise it as a specific genre?
- How is the process of writing a song?
- Do you have any hobbies beside music?

Photoshoot planning

Location
Forest, light outside.

Props
Nothing. There is not going to be anything in the actual photo that tells the reader it’s a music magazine.

Pose
For the image on the front cover, I want him to stand mostly still, but move on his head, so it becomes blurry in the final image. This gives the illusion that his head is going around, which fits with the main cover line I want to use, ‘’My head still spins 24/7’’. I also want some extreme long shots / long shots, showing a more of the surroundings. He should look casual.

Costume
He should wear a coat to look classy. The coat is going to be black, so it’s going to be easy to change to colour of it in Photoshop.

Some images I will take inspiration from:

Flatplan Designs

It might be a bit weird that I want an organic look to the magazine, almost as if it was a stylised magazine for hobby hunters, but if you think about it, making a design that everyone would associate with music is impossible. To make music, you need instruments, so yes- I could base my design around instruments, but truth is, music is so much more than just that. As I said, it is very hard to represent a genre using a design, without sound, so i think the design should end up being something personal- based on what I feel when I listen to the music.

Indie artist are called just that, because they are independent. They don’t belong to any large labels, and therefore, they have so much creative freedom themselves, that they almost don’t need to make the music for an audience. Of course, I am making the magazine to make money, so I have to make something that people will like, but when I think of indie, one of the first words that pop into my head is organic, and I really don’t know why.
